Mission 3

  • The overall plan:

    BG Orders

    TOPOGRAPHY

The ground is generally flat with some hills and varies from open pasture in the West to built up and Industrial areas in the East.

Key Terrain: The bridges, the high ground around the airbase, the city and suburbs of NEWCASTLE.

Decisive Terrain: The RAAF base, the urban areas (esp. STOCKTON) and port complex.

    SITUATION

Further to the General Brief issued by the S2 earlier, the following update is available.

    Enemy:

The Enemy currently concentrating up the coast towards NELSON BAY is assessed as possibly as large as Mech Bn, reinforced with Tk and anti armd spt.
This force is likely to be also supported by:

    - Heliborne forces launching from offshore / NELSON BAY; and
    - The remaining the force within NEWCASTLE.

Most Likely Course of Action (MLCOA): Is assessed as an attempt to retake the airfield IOT gain time for negotiations, to inflict casualties on ADF forces and to damage infrastructure as much as possible.
This would cause the Government of Australia (GOAS) to be embarrassed by its perceived inability to defend its own territory.

Most Dangerous Course of Action (MDCOA): Is assessed as retaking the airfield and pushing on to link up with a breakout from NEWCASTLE, supported by heliborne seizure of key crossing sites in advance of the main body. This would generate heavy casualties and inflict long term damage on infrastructure.

This would create more embarrassment than the MLCOA and if implemented would cause massive civilian casualties and inflict large scale economic damage on the region.

    Two Up: No Change.
    One Up: No Change.

CO’s Mission: BG TIGER is to defend in sector clear IOT maintain AS sovereignty in the NEWCASTLE region and set the conditions for the final expulsion of the Enemy.

BG TIGER remains 1st BDE’s ME.

    Civilians:

Our TAOR is lightly populated in the West however there are bound to be pockets of civilians who were unable to leave NEWCASTLE before the current deployments took place. Civilians have been asked to evacuate via the PACIFIC HWY to the SOUTH and NORTH so there should not be too many refugees in our AO.

Regardless, cbt in NEWCASTLE and other urban areas is to be conducted using the required level of force but no more.

  • Mission #3

    FRAGO

It appears the CT and Coy commanders want some guidance about a contingency plan for an attack we aren't aware of yet.
So here is something I had the OPSO work up.
Throughout I've described the effect I need, not how you are going to generate it.

    A Coy:
Block the Enemy in EAs 4 and 5.
Hold the line until CT D arrives.
Provide a firm base for CT D.

    B Coy:

You are not in the fight unless I determine that T29 needs reinforcement in which case I'll fold you into him.

    CT C:

You need to protect the airfield and allow the soft elements (echelon, research teams, etc.) time to withdraw through HEXHAM.
V1 should be able to identify the enemy's ME and give you an idea of dispositions, routes, etc.
Once V1 conducts his hand over, give him free passage to the rear. He has a job to do there.
The fight then belongs to you.
I need you to impose delay (ideally fwd of the airfield but if you must give it up pull back and we will retake later).
You have freedom of action between the Battle Handover Line (BHL) and the Final Delay Line (FDL) to array your force as required.
Happy for the Engineers to adopt their secondary role to spt you.
Tell me what is going on at all times and we can array the BG RES on either C-ATK A, B, or C as required.

    Again "Delay", not "Die".

    CT D:

    Spt A Coy
Unlikely but BPT to shift North if A Coy is holding and the situation near CT C is deteriorating.
    BG RES (T2(-) and ARH):
    T29 in charge.
Based on feeds from V1 and CT C will dispatch you onto one of the C-ATK locations identified. I prefer C-ATK C but the enemy may not conform to that.
Used HEART, CLUB and SPADE as required - you are the priority for movement once activated.
ARH have freedom to use whichever SBF is best to spt you.
The graphics are indicative not prescriptive.

    V1:

Need your forward elements to identify and destroy the enemy's reconnaissance assets.
Then either pull back or provide stay behind parties to interdict and delay the enemy's second echelon, C2 and administrative units.
    Do not die in place!
At the BHL you will conduct a hand off to CT C.
Once you achieve a clean break, I need you behind the FDL to ensure the routes to be used by the BG RES (esp. the bridge on SPADE) remain open.
Your SHQ is well placed to protect the HEXHAM crossing.

    I2:

    Patrol TAORs
If enemy lodges heliborne forces contain and if possible clear.
If not possible to clear, contain and await assistance.
I21 ensure RAYMOND TERRACE crossing remains open.
I22 ensure STOCKTON BRIDGE (on SPADE) crossing remains open.
Hopefully that clarifies things, if we ever need to implement this contingency plan.
